History of the Cavachon
Cavachons are a designer breed; a crossbreed between different dog to get a breed with specific qualities regarding their temperament, coat quality and physical characteristics. This breed is a cross between a Bichon Frise and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Mixed breeds have been happening for many years, so it is uncertain when exactly the Cavachon was discovered; but designer breeds started becoming fairly popular during the late 1990’s to early 2000’s. There are first-generation Cavachons that are the product of a purebred Bichon Frise and purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Second-generations are the product of Cavachon parents.
Physical Characteristics of the Cavachon
Being a Cavalier Bichon mix, this breed can come out looking a variety of different ways. There are a few different types of this breed based off of coat color:
- Blenheim (chestnut and white)
- Tri-Color (black, white and tan)
If you want to have an idea of what your puppy will look like, take a look at the parents! Since the Bichon and Cavalier have fairly lengthy fur, Cavachons will have medium length wavy fur. Their weight and height can vary depending on the size of the parents, but typically Cavachons are 12-13 inches and 15-25 pounds.
Hypoallergenic Hair of the Cavachon
Like their poodle relatives, our small Cavachon pups have no undercoat, making them an ideal fit for people with animal fur related allergies. But lets be clear; there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. Cavachons may lack an undercoat but some of their hair will come out and all dogs shed skin cells; just like humans. You should be able to snuggle up close with your pup and be sniffle free! You can brush your dog once or twice a week to help with any shedding they may have and to keep their hair from matting.
Temperament of the Cavachon
Perfect is a strong word, but it is hard not to use it when talking about the Cavachon. This breed is friendly with all walks of life; children, other dogs, the elderly and whomever/whatever may cross their path. Cavachons are naturally loving, but it is important to keep your puppy socialized with all types of people and animals if they are going to be surrounded by them frequently. This breed is also intelligent and if you are diligent and patient with your puppy training, you will have an obedient and house-trained pup in no time! They are known to bark when they hear something or someone approaching, but they are not the best guard dog since they will more than likely greet an intruder with kisses and a wagging tail. This breed does well with moderate exercise but a big back yard is not necessary; they can live in an apartment, townhome or house. Children and Cavachons are like peanut butter and jelly; they make the best playmates and after tiring each other out your Cavachon puppy will love to just snuggle up and take a nap.
