History of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a history that is just as majestic as its name suggests. This breed can be traced back to England; even long before the reign of King Charles II for whom the breed was named after. The Cavalier that we know today has a flatter muzzle than the spaniel of the past; this is due to it being bred with a flatter-faced breed. In North America this breed was referred to as the English Toy Spaniel. The Toy Spaniel Club in England was created in 1886 and gave the breed separate names based on coat colors: King Charles, Prince Charles, Blenheim and Red. This was unsuccessful so they decided to use the name Toy Spaniel, but King Edward VII, the king at that time, disapproved so the name of King Charles Spaniel was granted back to the breed. The first record of a cavalier living in the United States was in 1956 and would finally be recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1995.
Physical Characteristics of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
This breed is relatively small; their average height between 12 to 13 inches (30 to 33 cm) with a proportionate weight between 10 to 18 pounds (4.5 to 8.2 kg). They have large expressive eyes and floppy years. The Cavalier has a silky coat of moderate length that can have a slight wave to it. Feathering can grow on their ears, feet, legs and tail in adulthood. This spaniel has four different colors; Blenheim (white coat with rich chestnut markings), Black and Tan (black coat with tan markings), Ruby (completely chestnut coat) and Tricolor (black and white coat with tan markings).
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Temperament
This is one of the most lovable breeds there is! The Cavalier is great with children and other dogs and will be your shadow from the day you bring them home. They were originally bred to be a lap dog and they stay true to that even now, but can also be very curious and playful. This breed is known to chase things and not be very “street smart”, so it is important that you keep them on a leash when near busy areas. Also due to their gentle and friendly nature, they are not an ideal guard dog. Our miniature cavalier king spaniel pups love to play with other puppies and people and can not wait to be loved, so if you have a moderately active lifestyle, have kids or other pets and are looking for unconditional love from a furry friend, then this is a great breed for you! Many of our customers come from North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Maryland, Delaware, Washington DC
