History of the Cockapoo

The Cockapoo is a mix between an American or English Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. They are a very popular designer breed that has records of being in the United States starting in the 1950’s. The American Kennel Club does not recognize this breed as a breed group, but some dog clubs are carefully breeding consecutive generations to eventually establish Cockapoos as a recognized breed.

Physical Characteristics of the Cockapoo

The Cockapoo is a very diverse breed when it comes to its appearance. They can weigh between 6-25 pounds and are on average 14-15 inches in height. It depends on the kind of Poodle that is used in breeding to determine which end of the weight spectrum yours will fall on. Mini Cockapoos come in a variety of colors:

  • White
  • Black
  • Parti (one dominant color with other color markings)
  • Chocolate
  • Merle

The Cockapoo’s coat can vary from dog to dog. Some will have a coat more similar to the sleeker coat of the Cocker Spaniel, while others may have a curlier coat like a Poodle. Cockapoo’s are known to be hypoallergenic; but to be clear there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog. They may shed some hair and skin cells; just like humans. Also, depending on which breed your Cockapoo favors will play a factor on how low-shedding your puppy will be and on coat maintenance. This breed’s coat can grow quickly and may require frequent grooming and clipping in order to prevent matting.

Cockapoo Temperament

Cockapoo’s are known for some of the best qualities a breed can have; loyalty, playfulness, intelligence and good health are just a few. Your pup will want to snuggle with you in the mornings, play with your children in the afternoons and watch television with you and the family after dinner in the evenings; they will basically be like another member of your family! Your little Cockapoo puppy only wants to make you happy; so it is important that you train your puppy while they are young so they are obedient as an adult and socialize them with other dogs and animals so they do not learn to be fearful of other animals. Proper training and socializing will make your relationship with your puppy more fulfilling and positive and they will be a well-rounded pup!
